Week 6 Fantasy Basketball Rookie Rankings
NBA rookies are always fun to monitor. They’re even more fun to track when they’re on your Fantasy Basketball team. For the guys that drafted Julius Randle or Aaron Gordon, the fun hasn’t lasted very long. Jabari Parker owners are probably the happiest. For the guys that don’t own a single rookie, this is the article for you.
More than just keep tabs on which NBA rookies are doing well or exceeding expectations in their first year as a pro, we’re also making sure you’re up to date on young guns that may pay off in season long or daily fantasy basketball leagues. We’ll keep it to 10, as any longer than that will get into the sparest of spare rookies. For the most part, these 10 guys have impressed to some degree and can be used in some manner in the fantasy basketball scene. How much or little they’re used, of course, is ultimately up to you.
Let’s carry on with our week six fantasy basketball rookie rankings and see who is trending positively:
1. Jabari Parker, F, Milwaukee Bucks
Parker was easily the best overall rookie just a week or two ago, but now it’s not even remotely in question. Parker has really turned it on recently, with big scoring outputs (22 and 23 points) in the last two weeks. More importantly, he’s cleaning the glass and getting steals. He’s been a steady fantasy producer in his last five games and may finally be developing into a consistent fantasy force. But you already knew that if you own him.
2. Andrew Wiggins, F, Minnesota Timberwolves
Minnesota has gone through a litany of injuries, which has vaulted the explosive Wiggins from a hit or miss guy to a player on the brink of realizing his potential. That’s what we thought when he dropped a career high 29 points over a week ago, but since then we’ve seen inconsistent minutes and shaky production out of the prized wing. Wiggins has enormous upside and could still turn into a star as early as this season, but so far it’s only coming in waves. The fact that he comes in second on this list shows just how inconsistent this batch of rookies really is.
3. Nerlens Noel, F/C, Philadelphia 76ers
Noel has been a solid producer of points, rebounds and blocks in his true first season in the league, but fantasy owners have been bogged down by nagging injuries and inconsistent playing time. It looks like Noel has finally turned the corner on the latter at least, as he’s now logged 30+ minutes in four straight games. His production has been solid over that stretch, too, lending hope that his role and numbers only rise as the season goes on.
4. Nikola Mirotic, F, Chicago Bulls
Mirotic is a beast. His time on the floor has been sporadic, but when he does get serious run fantasy owners get serious results. Over his last six contests, Mirotic is close to averages of 12 points and six boards per game. He could stand to get even more run, but his owners can’t complain with Taj Gibson out. He’s more of a daily play at the moment, but he certainly has our attention.
5. K.J. McDaniels, F, Philadelphia 76ers
McDaniels has been fantastic this year and is now just finally getting consistent run. He inexplicably was being taken in and out of the rotation despite playing very well, and many think it has to do with the winless Sixers having zero interest in actually winning. That’s kind of crazy, especially since they now have righted that wrong. A rebounding machine for a win, McDaniels has ripped down 28 rebounds over his last three contests and is now getting 30+ minutes per game. He does a ton of things and is a great role player to have on your fantasy squad.
6. Elfrid Payton, PG, Orlando Magic
In research for this article I checked out various NBA rookie rankings articles just to make sure I didn’t forget anyone, and was surprised to find Payton left off many a top-10 lists. Not on mine, I say. Not only has Payton been remarkably good for a 20-year old learning on the fly, but he’s also been a fun guy to use in fantasy circles, as well. It’s true that his percentages leave a lot to be desired across the board, but he’s been as active as players come. Victor Oladipo’s return to the starting lineup has hurt him a bit over the past couple of weeks, but overall Payton has shown he belongs in the NBA and he’ll only get better. He’s really only a bench or utility player in season long leagues right now, but he has terrific long-term upside and remains an interesting daily play anytime an Orlando guard sits out with an injury.
7. Bojan Bogdanovic, F, Brooklyn Nets
Bogdanovic isn’t a spectacular player by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s definitely a solid one. He’s held down a solid role in Brooklyn’s starting five and he’s not looking to relinquish it anytime soon, either. He can hit the boards well at times, while his key asset is his solid outside shot. He’s a solid source of three’s and when he’s cleaning the glass he’s a solid guy to use. Most importantly, he’s on the floor a ton and the Nets trust him. That’s music to any fantasy owner’s ears and we can only hope he continues to grow with the team as the season moves forward.
8. Kostas Papanikolauo, F, Houston Rockets
Papanikolauo is right behind Bog, but not that far. He’s another terrific outside shooter and actually can do more than Bog can. He hasn’t had quite as huge of an impact in Houston as far as the numbers game goes, but he’s been a nice role player and can have his moments. He is a better passer and likes to take it to the hole, but his minutes aren’t nearly as good. Hopefully the Rockets start trusting in him even more and his role can grow.
9. Zach Lavine, PG, Minnesota Timberwolves
Lavine dropped a career high 28 points in a game recently and for a while was manning the point due to injuries, but he clearly has a long ways to go in his development. With that said, we’ve seen flashed of excellent vision and an improved shooting stroke. It’s going to take time for him to piece it all together, but he’s a great Dynasty hold and an interesting stash in case he falls into more minutes later in the year.
10. Tarik Black, C, Houston Rockets
Black has been working hard with Dwight Howard on the shelf, chasing 10 rebounds on almost a nightly basis. His run still isn’t insane and he isn’t a great offensive player, but he does the dirty work and is a solid double double threat to use off the bench. He still has a lot of refining to do but he’s looking better by the day and even posted a nice double double in his last game.
Honorable Mentions: Dante Exum and Shabazz Napier
