Next Move
By Chavez D. Cooper
The Pistons now have to select a new head coach. And tinker with the core starting five to find a new featured go to guy. And thirdly. see what the 2008 draft will yield them if they decide to keep the pick.
Decisions, decisions, this will be one of the most intriguing summers in recent years for Pistons fans. Joe Dumars will have to select the right coach, trade for the right players, and draft a player who may assist them down the road.
The Coach
It was Terry Porter, Michael Curry and now a sleeper selection of Mike Woodson. Porter yesterday accepted the Phoenix Suns job, he was the front runner due to his relationship with head of basketball operations Steve Kerr.
The name being thrown around as the heir apparent to Flip Saunders is Michael Curry. However recent reports confirm that the Pistons asked for and received permission to speak with Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Woodson.
In my estimation Woodson would actually be the best selection. Here is why, he was the lead assistant on Larry Brown's staff that won the NBA Title in 2004, so he has a history with the Pistons. Secondly, notice the man love the players give him whenever the Pistons play the Hawks, he is well respected by the players.
With this group whoever is left over and not traded, that will go a long way with them, Woodson was on the staff that saw them win a championship. He will not be afraid to coach them, push them when necessary like he did in the good old days. The Hawks new GM former Pistons GM Rick Sund has been non commital with Mike Woodson, they have until June 25th to decide what they want to do with him.
Michael Curry is highly revered within the organization it seems. The players seem to respect him. He is hard nosed, and because he was not a superstar player in this league, he only knows how to out work people to survive. I expect though he will have a learning curve with the new Pistons. I large learning curve actually and here is why.
He will not inherit a team with a cohesiveness of a starting five in tact for six straight years anymore. Joe will likely mandate he find a way to utilize Rodney Stuckey and Amir Johnson more next season. And even start getting minutes for young big man Cheick Samb. So his job will be tough in that he will need to stay competitive, yet implement the young future of the Pistons.
Either is an improvement over Flip, but if I had to choose one, I go with Woodson because he had to work with a young team already, and took them to the brink of eliminating the Celtics in 7 games. His intangibles to me, give him the nod, he is a former Piston coach, and was on the championship coaching staff.
In fact it is noted, he kept Rasheed and Ben in line most often on the staff. He is not a softie, and the guys would respect Woodson.
New Blood
It was apparent in the ECF game 6 that when games are on the line, it helps when you have a player who can create off the dribble, and create shots for others. Thus Joe should definitely pursue in my estimation three players who can assist them.
My first target would be Denver's Carmello Anthony, Joe should inquire if the Nuggets are willing to discuss a trade for Anthony . He is a gifted scorer, he can carry a team on his back. He requires a constant double team, and would spread the floor for others. Can you imagine what he and Rodney Stuckey could accomplish together?
Two guys who can get to the rim against anyone? If Rodney works on his periemeter jumpshot this summer, he will be unguardable. The Pistons need someone like Carmello to spread the floor for their big men. They young guys will get more one on one opportunities with a prime time scorer amongst them.
Second target would be Elton Brand, for some reason he has Piston written all over him. He is consistent, a 20-10 guy, and he is like KG in that he is a money outside shooting big man. He will command a double team, and is an excellent passer. The Pistons have the pieces to at least intrigue LA to move him. His 16.5 million dollar contract would provide them salary relief.
The Clippers will not be in championship contention anytime soon, and Brand like most guys reaching their prime, wants to be on a championship caliber team. If I were Joe, I would feel out LA, and see what it would take to get it done.
The last target may not be a popular one, however, hear the logic first before you cringe. Ron Artest. I know he is still villified by many here in Detroit, however put that aside and look at what he brings to the table. He is tough SF, strong, can post up and shoot the 3 pointer. He is a premium defender who will not allow the Paul Pierce's and LeBron James of the world to bully him the way they bully Tayshaun.
He is a risk of course, but let's not be foolish here, the last two seasons, a dominant SF killed us in the ECF, if we can't get Tayshaun to show up at the most important times, we need someone who can. And make no mistake about this, Pierce and LBJ will be standing in the Pistons path for several more years to come. The SF position has to be upgraded in my opinion, and Ron Artest is worth considering.
Understand to secure anyone of these three it will likely require one starter, one bench player, or two starters and one bench player and a pick. So ultimately what has to be given up to get one of the first two players is pivotal. I really think Ron Artest can be had much cheaper. However I prefer Carmello be option 1A, and Elton Brand 1B, on the wish list.
The Draft
This draft will only be relevant to the Pistons if a trade yields them a lottery or mid first round draft pick. And actually after about the top 10 picks, it will be a crap shoot. If they keep their own pick, it will likely be a developmental pick.
They will attempt to find a gem, who can be groomed for down the road. I see they have worked out DJ White, Omri Casspi, Joe Crawford, Malik Hairston, and others. So I assume they are looking for the best value regardless of position. So expect alot of wheeling and dealing to take place soon. In the game of chess your opponent makes a move that puts them in a position of strength. (Boston did that this past summer) Now the Pistons have to counter that move to get the advantage back.
And to get the advantage back some pieces have to be sacrificed. What pieces will be sacrificed by the Pistons no one knows, however to get the advantage back, Joe D has to make the right moves. Stay tuned, watch the board.
