Butler finished with 10 points (4-9 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 1-1 FT), six rebounds, an assist and three blocks across 28 minutes in Wednesday’s 120-114 win over the Blue Coats.

The Scoop:Butler stood out on the defensive end with his three blocks but also left his mark on offense, even if he wasn't shooting the ball too well. Butler has scored in double digits in two of his first three appearances with Capital City this season.

Let go by Portland
Butler was waived by the Trail Blazers on Friday, Sean Highkin of RoseGardenReport.com reports.

The Scoop: Butler was waived in order to make room for Justin Minaya's two-way roster spot. Butler made 19 NBA appearances last season but will likely spend the 2023-24 campaign with the Trail Blazers' G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix.

Remains in Portland on two-way deal
Butler agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with Portland on Wednesday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports.

The Scoop: Butler appeared in 19 games for the Trail Blazers last season as a two-way player and averaged 2.4 points across 11.6 minutes. However, with the departure of Drew Eubanks, Butler could be in line for a larger role at the center position behind Jusuf Nurkic, especially in light of the fact that Portland is transitioning to a youth movement across the board.

John Butler: Coming off bench Saturday
Butler will come off the bench for Saturday's matchup against the Clippers, Law Murray of The Athletic reports.

The Scoop: Butler got the nod and played 37 minutes during Thursday's loss to the Spurs, but Kevin Knox will draw the start Saturday. Across the past six games, Butler has averaged 5.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals in 23.2 minutes.

John Butler: Stars defensively in start
Butler ended Thursday's 129-127 loss to San Antonio with 12 points (4-11 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals across 37 minutes.

The Scoop: Butler drew his first career start Thursday and was excellent defensively, posting multiple tallies in each defensive category. With the Trail Blazers essentially shutting down a majority of its regulars, Butler has seen an increased role over the past six games, averaging 5.5 points in 23.2 minutes, but the undrafted rookie out of Florida State has picked up his production over his past two appearances, posting 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in 31.0 minutes during those contests.
