Undergoing season-ending surgery
Fox will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair tendon damage to his left pinkie finger, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.
The Scoop: While he was still playing for the Kings back in November, Fox admitted that he was playing through a ligament injury in the finger. The injury didn't seem to compromise his play, and he missed just four games all season due to a right thumb sprain, and none after being traded by Sacramento to San Antonio in early February. With the 27-37 Spurs having faded from the playoff race and with Victor Wembanyama (blood clot) already out for the season, Fox will opt to get the finger injury addressed now rather than waiting until the offseason to have surgery. He'll conclude his eighth NBA season with averages of 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, 4.8 rebounds, 1.9 three-pointers and 1.5 steals in 36.1 minutes per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field over his 62 appearances. In Fox's absence, Stephon Castle is the likely candidate to fill the opening in the Spurs' starting five alongside Chris Paul, while reserves Julian Champagnie and Keldon Johnson could benefit from more playing time over the rest of the season.
