Trans. Jul 25 7:11 ET (Jul 25 7:11 ET ) LONDON (Reuters) - A year on from riots that shook British society to its core, the UK's Olympic athletes have a responsibility to show London's young population a different way forward, basketball player Pops Mensah-Bonsu said on Wednesday. "I was born and raised right behind Tottenham police station, where everything kicked off last year. It really hurt my heart watching all of that happening," Mensah-Bonsu, a former NBA player with the Toronto Raptors, told a news conference ahead of the official opening of the Games on Friday. ...

The News
Pops Mensah-Bonsu was waived by the Hornets Tuesday.
Our View
Pops' contract would have become guaranteed Wednesday, so the Hornets jettisoned him just in time. He had absolutely no fantasy value in any format, anyway.
The News
Emeka Okafor did not attempt a shot in 26 minutes though he did grab nine rebounds in Wednesday's 95-91 win over the Bucks. He didn't register an assist, steal, or block.
Our View
We doubt this is a trend, but it's certainly not a positive. The good news is that the Hornets won and his backups are Pops Mensah-Bonsu and D.J. Mbenga. We expect a big role and bigger production from Okafor moving forward.
Free-agent guard Jannero Pargo is returning to New Orleans, and the Hornets also signed forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu on Friday. Details of the contracts weren't released. Pargo has played in the NBA for seven seasons, averaging 6.6 points and 2.0 assists in 379 games with the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors and New Orleans.
The News
Pops Mensah-Bonsu has accepted an invitation to Hornets training camp, according to Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Our View
He's got a shot to be on the roster opening night, but there's still no guarantee he'll make the team. Pops is a physical player with good size, but he hasn't put it all together yet.
Toronto has claimed Mensah-Bonsu off waivers from Houston and he is expected to be in uniform for the Raptors' game at Denver on Tuesday.
The Scoop:Mensah-Bonsu played for the Raptors last season. He signed a free-agent deal with Houston on Sept. 3 and played a total of 12 minutes in four games before he was waived Friday.
