Dante Cunningham News
Trans. Feb 17 9:09 ET (Feb 17 9:09 ET ) Dante Cunningham redeemed the Grizzlies after they blew a 23-point lead in the second half. He tipped in Rudy Gay's miss with less than a second left and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Denver Nuggets 103-102 Friday night. "The importance of that play - I don't have the words for it right now," guard Mike Conley said, "because I don't think that Cunningham understands how...
The agent for free-agent forward Dante Cunningham says his client plans to file a civil lawsuit against the woman who accused him of domestic assault. After a four-month investigation, authorities dismissed a charge of felony domestic assault against Cunningham on Tuesday, saying ''there was no proof beyond a reasonable doubt for the charged offense.'' ''Dante Cunningham is innocent,'' agent Joel Bell told The Associated Press on Tuesday. ''Dante is outraged that the taxpayers of Hennepin County had to pay for countless hours of attorney and police time because somebody made a false claim for their own personal interest.'' Cunningham, who played the last two seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, was charged in April after he was accused of choking his then-girlfriend at their suburban Minneapolis home. Cunningham had talks with several teams earlier this summer, including the Timberwolves.
The Scoop:The felony domestic assault charges have already been dropped and he had to spend time in jail because of it. Cunningham may have also missed out on a contract due to the off-the-court issues, so he could be filing a major suit.
Dante Cunningham has spent the last four months in limbo with a domestic assault charge hanging over his head, his home fans booing him when he took the court for the Minnesota Timberwolves and several teams in need of a power forward on the free-agent market staying away while the legal process played out. The news he was long expecting finally came down on Monday when Hennepin County authorities announced they were dropping the felony charge against him, enabling the free agent to start looking for a job next fall in earnest and start putting a difficult period behind him. I knew the situation and I knew I was going to be cleared,'' Cunningham told The Associated Press in a telephone interview on Monday evening. The Timberwolves abided by NBA rules and continued to play him in games the rest of the season, and Cunningham routinely heard boos and heckles from the crowd about the allegations.
The Scoop:Cunningham can now put this troublesome chapter of his career behind him, and focus on trying to sign a contract for the upcoming season. Cunningham, currently an unrestricted free agent, averaged 6.3 points, and 4.1 rebounds through 20.2 minutes of action for the Timberwolves last season. We'll reserve predicting his fantasy value for the upcoming NBA season when we know where he will be signing, but he'd have to land on a bad team to be relevant.
The Scoop:His hearing was delayed six weeks until June 19th. Cunningham was also arrested a week later for suspicion of terroristic threats. If convicted of the assault charge, Cunningham may be forced to do jail time. Even if he avoids incarceration, he will be subject to a suspension, so that probably won't help his case as an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Dante Cunningham had the first 20-10 game of his career on Friday vs. the Rockets with 20 points, 13 boards, one assist, one steal and three blocks in 42 minutes.
The Scoop:It's hard to believe he was in jail last weekend and has two serious charges filed against him. Kevin Love (elbow) did not play tonight and he should be back on Saturday, so Cunningham is more of a speculative add. If you want to add him, hopefully you're not cutting a guy you'll miss.
Dante Cunningham returned to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Tuesday night's game against San Antonio, just over 24 hours after being released from jail for his second arrest in three days. The forward was in uniform and available to play against the Spurs, with the Wolves and the NBA following collectively bargained rules that require them to wait until the legal process plays out before deciding to issue any discipline. Cunningham was charged last week with felony domestic assault for allegedly choking his girlfriend in his suburban Minneapolis home. Cunningham posted bail on Monday night, but authorities have not charged him off the second arrest while they continue to investigate.
The Scoop:Cunningham faces multiple charges, including felony domestic assault and probable cause of making terroristic threats, but for now he'll suit up as the short-handed Wolves try to finish the season strong. He should be considered day-to-day given the uncertainty of his legal situation.
