Trans. Dec 19 8:08 ET (Dec 19 8:08 ET ) Trading away four-time all-star Rajon Rondo from a Boston Celtics team that's clearly in rebuilding mode will have a significant impact on the Celtics' roster. But will they be better or worse off for the deal? Reviews will be mixed of course. But at the very least, the trade makes the Celtics a deeper team with tremendous potential among its frontcourt players. The addition of Brandan Wright provides Boston with one of the NBA's best finishers around the basket, evident by the 6-foot-10 forward/center shooting 74.8 percent from the field this season. Boston also added 6-6 Jae Crowder who is the kind of high energy athlete that the Celtics could use, especially defensively at the small forward position. The trade increased Boston's roster to 16 players so there was still some work to be done with the roster tonight. Boston will reportedly release Vitor Faverani to get down to the league-maximum of 15 guaranteed contracts. While the trade's impact will be minimum initially in terms of wins and losses, it provides more promise for this franchise's future. Boston has five draft picks in the next two seasons, and that doesn't include the two they acquired in tonight's trade with the Mavericks. And as we've seen this season, the Celtics are enduring the kind of growing pains that any youthful team will experience. But this is a scrappy bunch that has shown progress, but hasn't been able to play with the kind of consistency you often see with older, more seasoned teams. So while losing Rondo on the surface may appear to be a major blow to Boston, the Celtics have shown the ability to play well without their captain - make that former captain. -- A. The Scoop:The Mavs no longer have a true center to help backup Tyson Chandler, so it makes sense that they would have interest in Okafor or O'Neal. O'Neal has stated that he will make a decision "after the holidays" as to whether he wishes to continue his NBA career, and Okafor is still recovering from a herniated disk in his neck. For now, Greg Smith and Charlie Villanueva will audition for the backup role, and it'll be interesting to watch Rick Carlisle's rotations develop over the coming days.
The Scoop:With Marcus Smart (Achilles) being listed as questionable, and Jameer's status uncertain, Evan Turner could draw the start on Friday in a favorable matchup vs. the Timberwolves. Jae Crowder would likely play sparingly behind Jeff Green if available, so his status shouldn't matter in most leagues, while Brandan Wright's spot in the rotation is not clear at this point. Stay tuned for an official update closer to tip-off.
The Boston Celtics have traded versatile point guard Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks for three key players and an NBA first- and second-round draft pick, the Mavericks said. The Mavericks will give up Brandan Wright, Jameer Nelson and Jae Crowder -- three key members of their playing rotation -- along with their 2015 first-round draft selection and a 2016 second-round draft pick in a deal that will also bring Dwight Powell to Dallas.
