The Pistons have agreed to terms with free agent forward Josh Smith, who has spent his entire career with the Atlanta Hawks. Smith's contract with Detroit will be for four years, $56 million.
Smith will likely start for the Pistons at small forward, unless the team decides to trade either of their young post players Greg Monroe or Andre Drummond. It had been rumored that Smith could wind up with the Houston Rockets after they announced they are also signing superstar free agent center Dwight Howard.
The move is a major gamble for Detroit, a young team with a substantial amount of cap room to use this summer. At 27, Smith is in the prime of his career, and the Pistons hope that he can offer a long-term solution in the frontcourt.
