The Mock GM game opens up in three days and if you haven't been reading my
articles, then you should consider doing them to give yourself an idea of what
you planning to do with your desired team. This article will feature the
Free agents: Chris Kaman, Mike James, and Elton Brand
Potentially freeing up about 15million with team options
Draft Picks: 13, 44
General: Dallas has a win now mentality and with Dirk Nowitzki aging you might
want to give him a team that gives him a chance to win his second ring. You
really don't have much to work with unless you do what their doing in real life
and that is bringing in cap flexibility to sign max players. Dwight Howard and
Chris Paul are must pick ups, other options could be Al Jefferson and Andrew
Bynum. Remember you are the Dallas Mavericks so you should have some leverage
during free agency but it will always be a risk. If you want to make it
interesting then just rebuild because if you plan on improving via trades then
it will be tough. There aren't many valuable pieces, so maybe trading Dirk for
some valuable starters could work in your favor with the draft pick. If you want
to win now, the only way is freeing up cap space and dealing with OJ Mayo's
Draft: Best player available at 13, whether its a point guard such as Michael
Carter-Williams, CJ McCollum or someone like Shabazz Muhammad, all should be
good options. Remember there are some nice big men available in the FA, so
target a point guard or wing here.
Free Agency: Must go after max contract players, see the general description
Free Agents: Only Team options, your choice whether they will be Free Agents or
Potentially freeing up: 20million
Draft pick: 34
General: This team is way too young but interesting. In my opinion Parsons nor
Lin are reliable number two's for Harden. This team desperately needs another
scorer, preferably at the power forward position. The team has a lot of young
power forwards but none are consistent starters. The team must bring in a low
post scorer because they simply don't have one. The team could also use an
upgrade at the point guard position if you don't like Lin, but thats completely
up to you.
Draft: Trade the pick for a veteran, no point in bringing in another rookie
after last years 3 first round picks
Free Agency: If you decide to target a max contract then you should target
Chris Paul before targetting Dwight Howard. I also think Al Jefferson would be
a better option because it provides low post scoring for you. D12 will be in
high demand and if you throw all your chips in his bag you might be
Free Agents: Tony Allen
Potentially freeing up: 4million
Draft Picks: 41 55 60
General: This team is definitely a small market team. However, they are a piece
or two from making it over the hump. They are missing perimeter scoring. This
team really needs someone who can stretch the court and score the basketball.
Do not touch your big men, they have tons of chemistry and seem to be one of
the best duos in the NBA. Outside of perimeter help, this team can use valuable
bench players. Look to package up those draft picks for a few bench players,
maybe a backup center and another wing.
Draft: Trade the picks
Free Agency: Must work on bringing back Tony Allen and after that you must use
the MLE on someone who can score the basketball. Work on bringing back Mayo or
someone like J.R. Smith
**New Orleans Pelicans
Free Agents: Al Farouq Aminu
Potentially freeing up 5million
Draft Pick: 6
General: This team is far from being complete. Yes, they are rebuilding and you
should contribute to that process. Other than Anthony Davis, I don't see anyone
on this team being a long term player. Eric Gordon is a terrific player but he
is always injured and I believe you should trade him right away. Vasquez has a
limited ceiling and Robin Lopez is not a serviceble starter. Package up Gordon and
Vasquez for either a better point guard or better center for Anthony Davis. You
must work around Davis, a big man with a post game would be nice down-low or a
point guard that can feed Davis the ball. Don't trade for the sake of trading.
Draft: You would be wise to take Mclemore if he falls, but he won't. If he
doesn't fall then you should look at Trey Burke or Alex Len, which ever you
prefer. Both players will pair nicely with Davis. Can't go wrong with Porter
either if he falls but assuming no one falls then Burke and Len could be the
best players regardless for the Pelicans.
Free Agency: If you move Gordon then you must work on bringing in scorers in
return. Rivers at this point is just a 6th man. Target the wing positions
because the Center and Point guard position should already be taken care of.
**San Antonio Spurs
Free Agents: Tiago Splitter, Gary Neal, Stephen Jackson, and Tracy Mcgrady
Potentially freeing up: 17million
Draft Picks: 28 and 58
General: I listed this as a hot team because you can either choose to contend
or rebuild. Personally I'd work on rebuilding. Manu Ginobli has to go and so
does Duncan(for the sake of the game, even though I would never trade Duncan).
One player you must keep is; Tony Parker. Do not touch him unless you are
getting another star point guard. Manu and Duncan might not bring in a lot of
value but you could bring in potential and upside. If you are years away from
winning then you might want to consider moving Parker for a younger point
guard. Leonard should be a future All-Star so he should also be off the block.
If Pop leaves then Green is back to being a bench player. Really this team
needs a new set of bigs and a shooting guard most importantly. If you don't
want to rebuild then you should just add on to whatever you have. Do not touch
any of the core pieces, the Spurs have been doing that for a long time and its
been working, don't make the same mistake the Pistons did in reali life.
Draft: If you are the Spurs then draft the consensus highest rated international
prospect on the board, trust me.
Free Agents: I'd work on bringing in a big man, maybe someone like Paul Milsap
since he will be cheaper and another scorer to take some load off Parker,
perhaps OJ Mayo?
