Bring Stack Back
By Steve St-Pierre
With veteran Pistons swingmen Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince injured
indefinitely, it might be a good time to bring Jerry Stackhouse back to the
Motor City.
Stackhouse was said to look good after spending the summer training in
Atlanta. He has expressed interest in returning to the Pistons, and the
team could use a former fan favorite and quality scorer off the bench.
We've seen what Detroit is getting out of an aging Ben Wallace. Stack
would undoubtedly provide similar leadership on and off the court to a
youthful squad missing its top two veterans. He wouldn't need to play a
huge amount of minutes; just 10-15 per night while Hamilton and Prince
recuperate would be a major bonus to a Pistons team still hoping to
compete for a playoff spot.
Battling numerous injuries since being traded by the Pistons to the
Washington Wizards in the summer of 2002, Stackhouse would
certainly have his share of skeptics. With such a young roster, Detroit
fans agree that the focus should be on letting their young players earn
plenty of minutes and the opportunity to develop for the future. It's
possible Stackhouse would resist signing with the team if he was to
play behind players such as rookies Austin Daye and Jonas Jerebko.
All being said, Stackhouse is a player who can help this depleted roster.
The Pistons have an extra roster spot since waiving rookie Deron
Washington. He could easily fill in until Hamilton and Prince return to the
lineup, and afterwards he could stick around, reuniting with Wallace and
Chucky Atkins, to finish his career in Detroit and help bring in a new era
of Pistons Basketball.
